Betty Palomino: “Life goes by very fast. Stop being afraid.”
How did you become a successful CEO? I have not only wanted to be an entrepreneurial woman nor have I wanted to be a simple businesswoman, I wanted to be a successful businesswoman and the best way I have achieved it is by having the most necessary knowledge about business. The idea is that you can say without hesitation that: my business is prosperous.
An entrepreneur woman dreams of being a successful business woman to feel that all the effort she has put into building her business has been worth it. And although it is not an easy path, it is not impossible either, you just need to be willing to learn from those who know about it.
What year did you first immigrate to the United States and what was the experience of living in a completely new country like? The year I migrated to the United States was 1999. For me it was one of the best experiences of my life because I always had the conviction that I was going to succeed. I had arrived in a country full of opportunities, but I also knew that I was in a country that wasn’t mine and I had to try a lot harder. That it only depended on me to take advantage of those opportunities that were to come
After the sledding accident, doctors told you that there was a low chance of you being able to walk again. What kept you going in this adverse situation? The Doctors not only said the chances were slim, they said that I would never walk again. I always thought that I was in a nightmare and that I didn’t want to stay in a wheelchair for the rest of my life. I thought that the doctors were wrong and that what they were saying was impossible. From the beginning I thought it was going to be a temporary thing. Even though I don’t walk like a normal person nowadays I feel like a winner. I knew that I could not change my past but I could change my present and my future.
If you could go back in time, is there anything you would change? Any advice you would give to your younger self? Enjoy every moment. Life goes by very fast and you have to live every moment every second. Stop being afraid. Not being afraid of failure, of the judgment of others, of life. Great advice, but you will never realize how useful it is until you allow yourself to be guided by fear and see where it has taken you. The experience makes us bigger as they say, she is a ruthless teacher: first she makes you take the exam and then she explains the lesson to you.
You were on Telemundo’s Hoy Dia to talk about your story. What was it like going on TV for the first time? Happy and grateful to have had the opportunity to share with many people that with a strong mentality it is possible to overcome any obstacle.
What would you consider is your biggest achievement this year? My greatest achievement this year has been to increase sales by 20% and position BS Roofing Supply as supplier of the year in the Hispanic community in the state of Georgia.
What are some important lessons you’ve learned from your experience that you will pass down to your children? To live each day with intensity, as if it were the last: The meaning of life lies in how much time we spend on a daily basis and in the attitude that is developed in everything that is done. Every day is an opportunity to enjoy, to improve, to grow, to be a better person and to smile at life. Learn to enjoy happiness and deal with pain: Life is a roller coaster, with all its ups and downs.
You have to know how to enjoy yourself when you are at the top and be prepared for the fall. That my children understand that negative feelings, sadness and pain are emotions that they must feel, with which they have to learn to live will help them develop strategies to overcome them firmly when they arrive. That happiness is in ourselves and does not depend on anyone but one.
Can you tell us more about the book you are writing about your life? Do you have a release date set? I can only tell you that this book will change the mentality of all the people who read it. That no matter what tragedy has happened, that under any circumstance you can be successful. That is not only going to empower women, it will empower men as well.
I still do not have a release date because first I will start with media tours in the USA and Colombia to make my story known to a lot more people and then if we will launch the book, I think it would be next year around February.
What’s next for Betty Palomino? I am working on an expansion plan for the Southeastern U.S. for my Roofing Suppliers company, developing my personal Betty Palomino brand and launching my book in most Latin American countries.
